A Practice Rooted in the Sound Continuum

My practice is situated within a sound continuum, moving between atmospheres, music, voice, mixing, and narrative. It is a discreet, creation-oriented approach in which AI assistance accompanies a deeply human form of writing.

Musical Roots and Québécois Heritage

Why djfabien? I grew up immersed in a typically Québécois musical atmosphere, shaped by lively family gatherings filled with jigging and traditional rigodon. Instruments such as piano, guitar, and violin were always close at hand, ready to resonate. As a teenager, like many others, I wanted to learn electric guitar, but I preferred strumming my friends’ instruments. Later, as a young adult, I tried a private lesson, but quickly lost interest when the teacher began showcasing his own skills rather than teaching me. So I gave it up.

The Turning Point: Becoming a DJ as a Creative Outlet

Sometime later, I was asked to be the DJ at a cégep party. That is when something clicked: at last, I could express my creativity through music, refine my ear, learn mixing techniques, and shape the flow of an evening.

From DJing to Cinematic Turntablism

At the same time, I saw the DJ profession evolving, with headline artists producing their own tracks. Buying a Roland MC-303 was a step in that direction. However, I found myself more drawn to developing a concept of turntablism in a cinematic setting, where film scenes could be mixed freely using separate tracks.

The mobile phone is becoming an almost all-in-one creative tool, especially thanks to its built-in video and audio recording capabilities. However, what truly transforms the experience is its portability. I can now create anytime, anywhere, whenever inspiration strikes. With a digital stylus, I reconnect with a gesture that has always defined me: tracing, writing, erasing, drawing, and manipulating pixels. It satisfies my physical need to hold a pencil while benefiting from the speed, freedom, and flexibility of digital technology.

Racines musicales et héritage québécois

Pourquoi djfabien ? J’ai baigné depuis mon enfance dans une atmosphère musicale typiquement québécoise, marquée par des réunions familiales animées de gigue et de rigodon. Des instruments tels que le piano, la guitare et le violon étaient toujours à portée de main, prêts à résonner. Adolescent, je voulais, comme beaucoup d’autres, apprendre la guitare électrique, mais je préférais gratter celle de mes amis. Plus tard, en tant que jeune adulte, j’ai tenté une leçon particulière, mais j’ai rapidement perdu tout intérêt lorsque le professeur s’est mis à démontrer ses propres compétences plutôt qu’à m’enseigner. J’ai donc abandonné.

Le déclic : devenir DJ pour créer autrement

Quelque temps après, on m’a demandé d’être DJ lors d’un party de cégep. C’est à ce moment-là que j’ai eu un déclic : enfin, je pouvais exprimer ma créativité à travers la musique, affiner mon oreille, apprendre des techniques de mixage et influencer le déroulement d’une soirée.

Du DJing à l’exploration du platinisme cinématographique

Je voyais aussi le métier de DJ évoluer, les têtes d’affiche produisant leurs propres morceaux. L’achat d’un Roland MC-303 représentait une ouverture vers cette avenue. Cependant, j’étais davantage attiré par le développement d’un concept de platinisme dans un contexte cinématographique, où il serait possible de mixer librement des scènes de films à partir de pistes séparées.

Quand l’idée surgit : de la frustration au potentiel de l’IA

Parfois, des idées de mélodies, de chansons ou d’arrangements me viennent spontanément. Pourtant, la frustration de ne pas pouvoir les concrétiser immédiatement peut devenir décourageante. Lorsque l’intelligence artificielle s’est imposée à travers une multitude d’applications, j’étais au départ sceptique, voire réticent. C’est seulement après avoir pris le temps de les explorer que j’en ai reconnu le potentiel. Comme me l’a dit une personne qui m’a profondément soutenu à un moment charnière de ma carrière : « la création, c’est plus fort que soi ».

Créer dans l’instant grâce à la mobilité

Comment réagir aux idées qui émergent lorsque tout le monde dort à la maison et qu’un ordinateur portable devient encombrant dans un environnement qui exige rapidité et fluidité ? Cette forme de créativité spontanée, suivie d’une étape essentielle de recherche, peut aujourd’hui se déployer facilement à l’aide d’un téléphone intelligent.

Construire une identité artistique fidèle à ses racines

Au fil de mes recherches, j’ai découvert avec étonnement que le nom de domaine était encore disponible. Après une réflexion sur mon image de marque et sur la manière dont je souhaite me positionner, je suis revenu à mes racines artistiques, inspiré par certains créateurs. J’ai choisi de ne présenter que mon identité de marque. Cette démarche est aussi thérapeutique pour moi, puisqu’elle m’aide à tracer une direction claire.

L’essentiel : l’idée avant la technologie

Ce qui importe avant tout, c’est la créativité, non la plateforme utilisée. Même avec des outils de plus en plus puissants, la différence se joue dans l’écriture, dans l’idée poursuivie, dans l’instinct qui oriente chaque décision. La technologie peut accélérer le processus, mais c’est l’engagement humain, le temps et la perspective qui lui donnent sa valeur.

Influences, transmission et autonomie créative

Je me suis inspiré, entre autres, du travail d’un ancien ingénieur avec qui j’ai collaboré. Sa manière d’intégrer directement la créativité à sa production, en travaillant entièrement depuis son ordinateur, m’a marqué. Aujourd’hui, je poursuis ma propre voie, en utilisant mon téléphone intelligent comme principal outil d’écriture et de création. Bien que les instruments aient évolué, l’approche demeure la même.

Le téléphone mobile comme atelier portatif

Le téléphone mobile devient presque un outil de création tout-en-un, notamment grâce à ses fonctions intégrées d’enregistrement vidéo et audio. Mais ce qui transforme véritablement l’expérience, c’est sa portabilité. Je peux désormais créer à tout moment et en tout lieu, dès que l’inspiration surgit. Avec un stylet numérique, je retrouve un geste qui m’accompagne depuis toujours : tracer, écrire, effacer, dessiner, manipuler des pixels. Je réponds ainsi à mon besoin physique de tenir un crayon, tout en profitant de la rapidité, de la liberté et de la souplesse offertes par le numérique.

Revenir à l’atelier : entre technologie, matière et collaboration

J’estime essentiel de ramener ensuite l’ensemble dans mon atelier, afin d’apprécier la performance des machines plus traditionnelles, tout en intégrant au processus des retours critiques et des collaborations humaines.
